Ecuador is located on the west coast and is one of the smallest countries in South America. The Galapagos Islands form part of Ecuador. Ecuador is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Colombia, and on the east and south by Peru. Two ranges of the Andes are located in the country, they stretch from north to south, and are topped by tall volcanic peaks. The highest of them is Chimborazo. Ecuador can be divided into three types of terrain: the Sierra (the central highlands), the jungles of the Oriente and the coastal plains, which are known as the Costa. Each region has different factors that affect its climate.
